About Essaouira

What to know before you go.

Once called Mogador, Essaouira was laid out in the 18th century as a fortified trading port. Its whitewashed medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the constant trade winds keep the air fresh and the sea bright.

It is a city of artists, woodworkers and musicians, home each year to a Gnawa and world music festival, typically in June.
