What Agafay is
Agafay is a rocky desert landscape of pale stone hills close to Marrakech. It is not the Sahara and not a field of tall sand dunes. Its appeal is a beautiful sunset, wide skies, the High Atlas on the horizon when the air is clear and a dinner under the stars, all without a long drive.
The Agafay sunset dinner is a relaxed half-day experience of about 5 to 6 hours, with a return to Marrakech around 21:30 to 22:30 depending on the season.
What the Sahara is
The Sahara around Merzouga means real sand dunes, camel or 4x4 transfers to a dune camp and a night in a landscape that feels entirely different from anywhere else. It takes days, not hours: the shortest route from Marrakech is a 3-day journey with a long drive each way.
Activities
At Agafay you can add a dromedary ride, an e-bike or a safety-led quad session when pre-booked, or just enjoy the stillness. In the Sahara you can walk the dunes, ride at sunset, try sandboarding or take a short 4x4 circuit on slower itineraries.
Evenings in Agafay can be cold and windy from November to March. Bring a warm layer.
