The short answer
Choose Zagora if you only have two days and love palm valleys, kasbahs and the feeling of the south. Choose Merzouga if sweeping sand dunes are the point of your trip and you can spare three days.
Landscape: palms or big dunes
Zagora offers rocky, palm and pre-Saharan scenery with smaller dunes. It is atmospheric and quiet, a desert-edge escape rather than a substitute for the giant dunes of Erg Chebbi.
Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi, a sea of high dunes that rise more than a hundred metres. This is the postcard Sahara: caravans at sunset, rolling ridges and a sunrise that turns the sand from rose to gold.
Time on the road
The 2-day Zagora journey includes roughly 7 to 8 hours in the vehicle on Day 1, crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka and stopping at Aït Ben Haddou. The 3-day Merzouga tour is fast too: Day 2 reaches the dunes via Dadès, Todra Gorge and Rissani, and Day 3 is a long transfer of roughly 10 to 12 hours including stops.
