Earthen towers of Aït Ben Haddou in evening light, the first stop on both routes

Travel guide · 3 min read

Three days or five: how long do you need?

Both routes end at the same dunes. The difference is how much of the journey you actually get to enjoy.

The 3-day Sahara Express

The classic route from Marrakech: Aït Ben Haddou and Dadès on Day 1, Todra Gorge, Rissani and one night at the dunes on Day 2 and a return to Marrakech on Day 3. It is an intentionally fast itinerary, and Day 3 is a long transfer of roughly 10 to 12 hours including stops.

The 5-day Sahara Unhurried

Two nights around Erg Chebbi create a full day for the dunes: a walk, an oasis landscape, a respectfully arranged Khamlia music visit and optional sandboarding or a short 4x4 circuit. The road days are shorter and include Rissani, the Draa Valley, Ouarzazate and the Ounila Valley, though Days 1 and 5 still involve mountain driving.

Which should you choose?

Pick three days if your schedule is tight and you are comfortable with long driving days. Pick five if you are travelling as a couple or family, love photography or simply dislike rushed touring.
